What happens here

The garden is open to the public during library hours. Visitors are welcome to tour it, cut herbs from the raised beds, and eat meals there. It hosts many of the library's programming and educational events, and several youth programs run in it, teaching students about ecological processes, wildlife, and growing food.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

Libraries are not only for books.

01

The Need

The site beside the library was a derelict parking lot.

02

The Vision

The Village Learning Place works from the principle that libraries are not only a repository for books but community centres focused on the personal and professional growth of their patrons. Its vision is to lead in providing high-quality educational programs, enrichment opportunities, and informational resources in Charles Village and across Baltimore City. The garden extends that from the building into the ground beside it.

03

The Transformation

The parking lot is now a vibrant garden with raised beds visitors can harvest from.
