Who is Nature Sacred?

Nature Sacred is a nonprofit organization that partners with communities to design and steward Sacred Places: small, intentional greenspaces for healing, reflection, and connection. Their opening is only the beginning. The deeper, longer work is what follows — tending each place, and the network of community stewards who keep it alive for as long as it stands. For decades, we’ve done both.

We believe

01 / 04

Access to nature is a right—as essential as air to breathe and water to drink.

It's through nature, and the act of reconnecting with it, that we can build healthier, safer, more inclusive communities. Big city parks are glorious. But we advocate for something closer to home: greenspaces people can walk to, tucked within the communities they serve. Modest, meaningful, and welcoming.

And we believe change happens from within. The collective power of a community is a kind of electricity that people can plug into and stay plugged into. Never top-down. Always open, peer-driven, and participatory. This isn't a platitude for us. It's our every day.

Mission & Vision

02 / 04

Our mission.

To provide the opportunity for a deeper human experience by inspiring and supporting the creation of public greenspaces that offer a temporary place of sanctuary, encourage reflection, provide solace, and engender peace and well-being.

Our vision.

A time when every urban community in the U.S. will provide people with opportunities for intimate, intentional daily doses of nearby urban nature—through the creation of a system of nature spaces.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

03 / 04

It began with a small London garden.

Nature Sacred began in 1996 when Tom and Kitty Stoner set out to make the impact of nearby nature real for everyone. They'd been inspired by a small London garden called Mount Street Gardens. What started as a foundation became a movement, carried by the communities who made it theirs.
