What happens here
The courtyard is now an inviting urban green space for families, students, community members, and museum visitors, used for walking, gathering, sitting, and reflecting.
HOW IT CAME TO BE
The cars had claimed it.
01
The Need
Before renovation the courtyard was claimed by parked cars and transient traffic, leaving little room for pedestrians to enjoy the outdoor space beside the museum.
02
The Vision
In 1998 the courtyard was folded into the Campaign for the East Wing, the museum's renovation plans, with Nature Sacred playing a role in turning it into a fully landscaped public place.
03
The Transformation
The garden reads as an extension of the museum: its design, paving materials, and plantings were all chosen to reflect the eclectic collections housed inside.
