What happens here
The garden is used as a rehabilitation tool, teaching patients to manoeuvre on different types of terrain. That therapeutic option prepares them for negotiating their home and community environments after they leave the hospital. VISIT — 2200 Kernan Drive, Baltimore, MD 21207
HOW IT CAME TO BE
The ground itself is the therapy.
01
The Need
Patients leaving rehabilitation have to negotiate the uneven ground of their own homes and neighbourhoods, which a hospital's flat corridors do not prepare them for.
02
The Vision
Kernan Hospital's Healing Garden was made possible by local staff, community volunteers, and associations, and was designed and constructed from the outset so the garden could serve as a rehabilitation tool rather than only a place to rest.
03
The Transformation
The garden incorporates benches, a water feature with fish, a sensory garden, a medicinal herb garden, and secluded activity areas with specialized gardening tools, trellises, arbors, and planters. The varied terrain runs through all of it.
