What happens here
The therapeutic sensory garden empowers people of all abilities to work, learn, and relax together. It is open and accessible to the surrounding community, with the hope of creating a bond of understanding and respect between neighbours and the League's clients.
HOW IT CAME TO BE
Everyone works the same beds.
01
The Need
The League was founded in 1927, a pioneering agency committed to offering individuals with disabilities the opportunity to gain independence through a comprehensive continuum of services. A garden serving those clients could not be one they could only look at.
02
The Vision
The design was built so people of all abilities could work in it together, not merely visit it together, which is why the accessibility features are structural rather than added on.
03
The Transformation
The garden holds a relaxing rain curtain, wide and gently graded wheelchair-accessible paths and entrances, raised beds and containers, sensory-stimulating areas chosen for fragrance, texture, and colour, and adaptive tools.
