What happens here
The farm offers hands-on agricultural training and job opportunities to Intersection of Change's workforce development participants and to citizens returning from incarceration. Produce grown by environmentally sustainable methods is sold at competitive prices to retail, restaurant, institutional, and individual customers. Classes run at the farm stand to teach the farming practice used on site. Beyond harvesting and distribution, Strength to Love II hosts farmers' markets, concerts, and volunteer days. Volunteers and employees take refuge on the bench in the meditation garden.
HOW IT CAME TO BE
Vacant land, now a working farm.
Drag to see the transformation.
01
The Need
Sandtown-Winchester and the area around it face food apartheid. The 1.5-acre site had been vacant land.
02
The Vision
As a program of Intersection of Change, the farm's mission is to enrich the economic, social, and spiritual lives of those dealing with poverty-related issues in their community. Its Sacred Place was to increase what the farm could do: more agricultural training, more job opportunities, and a visible symbol of transformation in the neighborhood. Enhancing the experience of the volunteers and employees who work the farm was named a main priority for the meditation garden specifically.
03
The Transformation
This is Nature Sacred's fourth site partnership with Intersection of Change. The 1.5 acres already held several hoophouses, and new plantings went into the rest, laid out as six connected outdoor rooms. Ornamental flowers ring the perimeter to catch the eye of passersby on the street, and crape myrtles subtly frame each entrance. The interior rooms hold a grove of fruit trees, blueberry shrubs, and perennials — every plant chosen to serve twice, harvestable for the farm stand even if only for color, which keeps the stand operational nine to ten months a year. The farm stand was built as part of this process and faces the street. Layered over it all is a meditation garden lit softly and ringed with perennials, making a niche within the garden that faces out over the plantings. From the plantings to the gravel pathways, the design was built to cut maintenance as far as possible.
