What happens here

Artists and arts classes use the Artist's Circle regularly, alongside visitors who come to reflect, meditate, and enjoy the outdoors. Much of the Maryland Hall community — students, teachers, parents, neighbours — uses the labyrinth, bench, and circle year round. The space is within walking distance of the Bates Middle School community, the Spa Creek Trail, and greater Annapolis.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

Chartres, in Annapolis.

01

The Need

Founder's Green needed a centrepiece that would serve both the arts community and the wider neighbourhood.

02

The Vision

The labyrinth would be a replica of the one inlaid in the floor of Notre Dame de Chartres Cathedral outside Paris, and the Artist's Circle would sit directly opposite it, giving working artists their own ground within the same space.

03

The Transformation

The labyrinth was constructed in 2002 as the centrepiece of Founder's Green, with the circular Artist's Circle on the opposite side, a majestic elm tree, and benches for reflection.
