HOW IT CAME TO BE

Three times the national rate.

01

The Need

Martha's Place is a Maryland state-certified recovery program for women, bordering Sandtown-Winchester and Upton, offering long-term Single Room Occupancy housing and a structured program to help clients maintain sobriety and develop the life skills needed for independent living. National recovery rates are commonly listed around 30%; Martha's Place has run its long-term SRO program at 75% since opening in 2005.

02

The Vision

The garden is one of many points of service and care within the scope of Intersection of Change, an organization dedicated to programs that enrich the economic, social, and spiritual lives of people dealing with poverty-related issues in west Baltimore.

03

The Transformation

The site along Pennsylvania Avenue is now a lush green space with trees, flowers, a mural, a pond, and a fountain.

From the Little Yellow Journal

It is with great pride that I write this note of memorial. I visited this tranquil place today and had the opportunity to write my thoughts on the concerns of this neighborhood.
