What happens here
Residents who frequent the park may stumble upon a story-time or other children's programming, family picnics, or friendly games of chess or frisbee. People stop by for lunch or a quick break in the day. The school system and local educators continue to use the space for programs, gatherings, and events that draw the community together.
HOW IT CAME TO BE
The students wrote the grant.
01
The Need
Lineville is a historic town, and its centre had no serene, quiet space for residents and students.
02
The Vision
Firesoul Jamie Watts, an educator in the Clay County school system, started a class for students called V.O.I.C.E. — Volunteers Operating In Community Engagement — to help local youth get more involved in their community. The class partnered with the City of Lineville, and the students themselves wrote the grant for the park, which CFNEA later awarded. As Jamie remembers it, the students were so excited to see that the work they put in was successful. The park was created in partnership with the City and the Clay County school system, with an emphasis on children's programming and education.
03
The Transformation
The design is deliberately simple and comfortable: benches and picnic tables interspersed along a short, curving walkway in the centre of town. Short lampposts give the space an intimate feel, and an elegant water feature offers a refreshing vista.
