What happens here
The farm provides vocational training and work opportunities to adults with intellectual disabilities, and is a source of food and income for the organization as well as a resource for the wider community. It produces potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, cantaloupes, and strawberries. Some of that produce goes into meals at the Langton Green residences, so residents who work the farm eat what they have raised and take ownership and pride in the work.
HOW IT CAME TO BE
The machinery was built around the workers.
01
The Need
Since its founding in 1984, Langton Green has sought to establish a place where people with varying needs and abilities could live, work, and learn while making a positive impact on the surrounding community.
02
The Vision
Programs and services tailored to the individual, helping each person develop the skills to live as independently as possible, so that each realizes their potential and lives the life they choose. Langton Green is the only nonprofit of its kind in Maryland to hold the Council on Quality and Leadership's Quality Assurances Accreditation of Basic Assurances.
03
The Transformation
The farm sits on a 13-acre property in Millersville. Its operating and harvesting mechanisms are highly customized to the needs of its unique workforce, which is what makes the work genuine work rather than an approximation of it.
