What happens here

The park is frequented by children and families, neighbours, and people passing through looking for a comfortable, lively, and welcoming place to enjoy the outdoors. It supports the community as they heal both from the trauma of the 9/11 attacks and from a tragic event that took place in the area some years before the Sacred Place was created.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

One of eight neighbourhood groves.

01

The Need

In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, the Memorial Tree Groves Project was envisioned as a way to pay lasting tribute to the events of that day.

02

The Vision

The project was a collaboration between GreenSpaces for DC, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, and the US Forest Service. A city-wide team of stakeholders and community members designated Langdon Park as the official Ward 5 park. Each of the eight neighbourhood groves serves both to remember September 11 and to celebrate the community that surrounds it.

03

The Transformation

The park now holds a community recreation centre, an amphitheatre, playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, and a picnic area alongside the grove.
