What happens here
The garden is used daily for reflection and contemplation by patients, visitors, and employees year-round, and hosts events including the centre's Cancer Survivor Day, which celebrates patients who have beaten their disease. The Infusion Therapy rooms overlook the garden through expansive windows, so patients indoors get the benefit without coming outside.
HOW IT CAME TO BE
The floor is made of names.
01
The Need
Employees, visitors, patients, and families at the Tate Cancer Center all needed a green, tranquil space.
02
The Vision
Donors dedicated hundreds of bricks, engraved with the names of friends and family or with brief bursts of inspiration. The communal gathering space was built to sit on top of them.
03
The Transformation
The 8,000-square-foot garden is nestled behind the Tate Cancer Center, surrounded by lush grass terraces intricately landscaped with bushes and trees. It holds brilliant flowers, several hillside gardens, a winding stream, benches, and a rectangular reflecting pool, with two rectangular reflection ponds beside the outdoor seating area.
