What happens here

The Sacred Place is the focal point for morning walks with kids and dogs, for concerts, and for family picnics. At the spring equinox sailors gather from all over to burn their socks, a quirky rite of spring that says a good deal about the place. People sit and watch the yachtsmen's sailboats head out for the races and the watermen's workboats come back in from a day crabbing or oystering. Kayakers use the benches to take off their shoes before launching off the beach. The space is part of the Eastport Walking Tour and has evolved into a community gathering place.

The Transformation

The Sacred Place sits between the museum's two major structures, the 10,000-square-foot McNasby's Oyster Packing Company building — the last of 27 in the county — and the 600-square-foot Barge House. It looks out on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay where Back Creek meets the Severn River. Museum volunteers tend the garden that surrounds it.
