What happens here

HOW IT CAME TO BE

Two halves, two purposes.

01

The Need

Southwest Baltimore lacks both recreational facilities and community healing space, and barriers to getting outdoors fall hardest on Black and brown residents.

02

The Vision

Pigtown Climbs uses climbing and sustainable programming to foster black liberation, promote wellness, and connect Southwest Baltimore to the outdoors, with programming built to uplift self-identified Black and brown folks, minimize barriers to getting outdoors, and prioritize accessibility. Their plan for the site is unusual: the back portion becomes a climbing wall, the front along the street becomes a community contemplative and gathering space. The back stays fenced for security; the front stays open at all times. Both are to be actively programmed.
