HOW IT CAME TO BE

Named for the star Tubman followed.

01

The Need

Metcalfe Park is a hypersegregated neighbourhood where decades of poor policy, climate injustice, discrimination, and neglect have produced industrial pollution, heat islands, and a lack of access to high-quality green spaces. Residents need a safe healing space for themselves and their children.

02

The Vision

In 2012 five Metcalfe Park resident leaders formed the Metcalfe Park Community Action Team to work with neighbourhood and citywide partners on how resident engagement could improve the neighbourhood. Selected that year for the federally funded Building Neighborhood Capacity Program, they became Metcalfe Park Community Bridges, an organization for the community by the community. The park's name looks back to Harriet Tubman, who followed the North Star while leading enslaved people to freedom along the Underground Railroad. MPCB intends the park to be a place of healing, a place of connection, a place to be free, and in particular to lift up the protection of Black women.
