HOW IT CAME TO BE
The stream took the houses.
01
The Need
The site was originally the location of twelve homes that suffered chronic structural problems because of a feeder stream running below the ground. The homes were abandoned and demolished, and the lots were used as parking by MARC train passengers until the community reclaimed the space and turned it into green space.
02
The Vision
The vision was largely dreamed and begun by Ms. Barbara McQueen, a longtime community resident and the Adopt-a-Lot manager for the site. She has recently passed, and BSCW and their team are committed to implementing her vision while including new stakeholder input, so that history and the future thrive side by side. When complete, the site is to be somewhere community members can spend time and relax, a space that supports their health, and an outdoor classroom and resource for students at Mary Ann Winterling Elementary School a block down the road. The site is part of BSCW's larger vision to revitalize several blocks of the neighborhood into a green corridor.
