HOW IT CAME TO BE
A gateway to 14th Street.
01
The Need
The church is a gateway to Washington's 14th Street NW corridor. Much of the area is wealthy, and many unhoused people also live there; it is an intersection of people from many backgrounds, including Latine residents who have organized to buy buildings and convert them to co-ops. The church has seven existing micro-gardens it would like to rejuvenate and connect further.
02
The Vision
A Sacred Place would fit within the series of gardens already there, provide additional seating, and invite people to linger. An existing sidewalk system already encircles the property. Built in 1873 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the church describes itself as prayerful, spiritual, collaborative, and engaged with the world, offering hospitality through worship, fellowship, and ministry.
