HOW IT CAME TO BE

Eight floors of windows look down on it.

01

The Need

Lenox Hill is a 450-bed acute care facility on Manhattan's Upper East Side, receiving patients from across New York City and beyond, committed to the highest standard of care for a socioeconomically and ethnically diverse patient population. It has an indoor meditation room but no outdoor extension of it.

02

The Vision

The proposed Sacred Place would sit on the fourth-floor rooftop terrace, just off the elevators and adjacent to the meditation room. Beyond providing solace to patients, families, and staff, the design reasons that the benefit reaches further than the people standing in it: eight floors of patient rooms overlook the rooftop, so the garden would work through the windows as well as underfoot.
