HOW IT CAME TO BE

They drew it on the sidewalk first.

01

The Need

The site is owned by the DC Department of Housing and Community Development and had accumulated hazardous trees and other vegetation.

02

The Vision

Community members have long advocated for the space to become a gathering place, and have begun using sidewalk art to visualize their goals for it, hoping to turn it into a place for meditation and healing. Community leaders instigated the revitalization themselves, enlisting the DC Department of Transportation to remove the hazardous vegetation. Casey Trees holds a conservation easement on the site, which lets the Sacred Place overlay goals of environmental restoration and healing, and this would be Nature Sacred's second site with them.
